Encyclopedia of Life

‘Our knowledge of the many life-forms on Earth – of animals, plants, fungi, protists and bacteria – is scattered around the world in books, journals, databases, websites, specimen collections, and in the minds of people everywhere. Imagine what it would mean if this information could be gathered together and made available to everyone – anywhere – at a moment’s notice. This dream is becoming a reality through the Encyclopedia of Life.’

EOL’s mission is to increase awareness and understanding of living nature through an Encyclopedia of Life that gathers, generates, and shares knowledge in an open, freely accessible and trusted digital resource.

As per this dream, Encyclopedia of Life is providing incredible amount of information, simply at one touch of a button. This fascinating site is a great source to know at one place about many forms of life on the Earth. EOL has listed 1.9 million spices on this web site. The special feature of the site is an individual page for each of this specie with huge amount of texts, details, maps, classifications, sounds, videos and images. The number of images run from 10/20 images for one page to sometime hundreds and thousands for one page. Surprisingly for ants they have provided almost 90,000 images, http://eol.org/pages/699/media

EOL encourages participation of general public and students in solving real life problems along with experts and scientists. Any one above the age of thirteen can become their member. EOL allow their members to create private virtual collection on their website about the topic of member’s interest. Members can also create a field guide, make observations, play a game or find an upcoming event, using powerful educational tools and resources and applying information found on EOL.

This is definitely very useful resource for parents and teachers to educate young minds about the life, manifested by vast creation of Allah (SWT) at the same time introducing young generation to creative power of Allah (SWT), and to cultivate a habit of systematic observation and creation of records.
